Flowers for Teacher Appreciation Week

Sometimes, the Princess Cupcake and I don’t see eye-to-eye on our creative endeavors.

Like I REALLY wanted to put a photo silhouette of her in these flower for Teacher Appreciation Week (like the soccer ball cake). I had two copies of the perfect photo of her in a pink flower dress with her pink cowboy boots on…

“NO MOMMY. The picture will get dirty!”

She would not be swayed. Believe me, I tried.

And that’s okay. These were HER gifts for Teacher Appreciation Week. She picked out the flower pots. She picked out the flowers. It was Teacher Appreciation Week, Princess Cupcake style. All she needed me for was to pick up the bill.

And a couple other little details. Like I replanted the flowers and made the tags and the vinyl letters after she went to bed. I should have known that was my opportunity to make the photo silhouette darn it. Not in the morning after she saw it all looking pretty on the counter and stuff.

This was another quick and easy – fat and calorie free – way to remember your teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week. If you want to make this cute flower pot gift for your favorite teacher,

here’s what you need:

  • Cute flower pot – these are from Michaels and are on sale this week for $3.99
  • Pretty flowers – these are from Home Depot and were $4.48 each
  • Scrapbook paper – I used butterflies but you can use anything
  • Cardstock – I used black
  • Lollipop stick or similar
  • Printer or pen
  • Glue stick
  • Holepunch
  • Tulle – approximately 12 inches
  • Tape
  • Cricut Machine (optional)
  • Vinyl Letters – I cut these with the Cricut but you could buy sticker letters or rub ons, use a Sharpie to draw it on or leave them off entirely.

GROW teacher appreciation week

Here’s what you do:

Replant the flowers into the pots.

Print on scrapbook paper, “THANK YOU for helping (fill in child’s name) GROW smarter!” Ours says, “THANK YOU for helping Princess Cupcake GROW in God’s love” because she goes to a private Christian school. But I realize that may not fly in public school but maybe if your child goes to Sunday school you could use it for a special teacher there.

Cut your scrapbook paper out and with the glue stick, glue it to the black cardstock

Punch two holes on the left side in the middle of your flag about ¼ inch apart.

Pull your tulle through the holes and tie a pretty bow on the front of your flag

Tape the lollipop stick to the flag

Stick flag in flower pot

I cut the letters out on black vinyl with my Cricut using the Holy Cow (ha, ha, no pun intended) on the Cuttin’ Up cartridge. My settings were all on two. The Miss and Mrs were at 1-1/4 inch and the names were 2 inch.

Stick the letters to the pot and rub down with a popsicle stick.

Apple Cupcakes for Teacher Appreciation Week

“Mommy, those look like APPLES!”apple cupcakes for teacher appreciation week

That’s what the Princess Cupcake said when she came downstairs for breakfast this morning and saw our “snack” for the class.

She was looking at these apple cupcakes that I made, at the very last minute mind you, for Teacher Appreciation Week. I wanted to make them a bit more “apply” but under the circumstances, I’m good.

We got home late Sunday night – the night I was going to plan our Teacher Appreciation treats – so…. I actually remembered we had snack Monday night as I was driving home so… these apple cupcakes were created under duress. I nearly waivered and grabbed some cheese sticks to go with the endless orchard of mini oranges we seem to have, but it’s our last ceremonial snack day for the year – and it’s Teacher Appreciation Week, and I thought we should show up a little.

I decided to go with the mini apple cupcakes because there are 5 – FIVE — birthday parties this month – and the buttercream frosting to healthy snack ratio was way out of whack already.  The teachers (and coaches and ballet teachers) all got regular size apple cupcakes though.

Apparently they were a hit because they made the top 3 proclamations, “Mommy, my friends loved the apple cupcakes today!” that the Princess Cupcake made on the way home.

If you need a fast treat to take to school this week for Teacher Appreciation, this is it.

You will need:

  • Mini cupcakes
  • Frosting
  • Red food coloring gel
  • Red sanding sugar
  • Mini pretzel sticks
  • Green gummy candy or fruit strips

Here’s what you do:

  1. Dye buttercream red with gel food colors.
  2. Frost cupcakes.
  3. Roll/dip apple cupcakes into red sanding sugar and cover the frosting completely. I put the sanding sugar in a small bowl that’s a little larger than the cupcake.
  4. Smush a small dent into the middle of the top of the cupcake with some sanding sugar on your finger or a fondant tool.
  5. Break a mini pretzel into a ½ inch piece and stick into the dent on the top of the apple cupcake.
  6. Cut two strips (per apple cupcake) of green gummy candy and put on top of cupcake to look like leaves.

I purchased a couple of clear containers to put an individual cupcakes in, cut out a red tag and wrote, “Thank you for teaching me ballet,” “Thank you for teaching me t-ball” and tied it to the top of the container. These would be even cuter if you could find some red and white checkered cupcake wrappers.

And there you have it. Easy Peasy Apple Cupcakes for Teacher Appreciation Week.

Super easy cute teacher gift

The Princess Cupcake prefers to be called, “Cupcake” now that she’s in the “big girl” class at school. “Princess Cupcake” is soooooo little girl. However, “Princess Cupcake Superman” is still allowed.

Yes, the pre-school years started for us with a lot of fanfare. It ushered in uniforms and early drop-offs and lunches she can eat by herself. And a thermos. Let’s not forget the highlight for her – a red crayola shaped thermos, for which she told me that her friend Emma didn’t like it.

“Why doesn’t Emma like your thermos?”

“She said it wasn’t beautiful.”

Sigh. And so it begins.

But what stays the same is that we like to be a little extra kind to our teachers each year by bringing them special surprises. And Princess Cupcake Superman is always game for giving gifts.

I cannot take any credit for this idea because I saw it online (link below) and adapted it for us. It could not be easier:

  1. While in Michaels one day, picked up Duff’s clear food tubes, (especially designed for giving gifts of goodies that go straight to your hips), black and white ribbon, a piece of pink striped scrapbook paper.
  2. Stopped at TiffsTreats on the way home the same day to use my almost expired Groupon to get a variety “homemade” decadent cookies.
  3. Printed out this template.
  4. Cut it out, put a hole in the top and rubbed the edges with a ink pad that I can’t believe it’s still good since it’s been years since I’ve used it. Those Stampin’ Up people know what they’re doing…
  5. Dropped the cookies in the tube, realized I should have gotten more cookies because it didn’t fill all the way up.
  6. Cursed.
  7. Found the only color tissue paper I had (no scrinklies either unfortunately, that would have been cute) and stuffed it in the bottom.
  8. Picked up the tube and all cookies and tissue fell out.
  9. Cursed again. To which the hubs who was observing all of this said, “You sure are going to a lot of trouble to give someone some cookies.”
  10. Found tape and affixed bottom of tube to sides so weighty cookies don’t land all over the school hallway floor. Or worse yet, on my kitchen floor and annihilated by the pug frenzy.
  11. Wrapped ribbon around tubes and pulled both sides through the holes in the tags and tied a bow.
